concealed handgun holsters

Prolific gun writer Massad Ayoob is recognized around the world as one of the foremost experts on the concealed carry and use of firearms. Not only.+10 for the M-Tac. I live in Idaho and have a concealed weapons permit so i have carried every day for the last 5 years, I miss San Diego and want to return but I have questions about firearms considering i have grown accustomed to having them with me all the time. First the shotgun question I have a shotgun that I sawed off the barrel to 18.5 inches just above legal and have a pistol grip on but i was worried that since I modified the barrel myself it may still be illegal. also can i keep this under the seat of my truck if it is unloaded? Also I had a couple questions about handguns first of all i know you have to lock them in a case while in the cab of my truck, if locked in a case do they need to be unloaded? also do i need to keep the magazines somewhere else, or is in the case ok? If i decide to open carry my pistol do i need to step out of my parked car to remove it from the case and holster it? or can i do that while sitting in the car? And one final question I have a kel-tec .380 which has a belt clip like a pocket knife, can i just clip this to my belt and leave the magazine in my pocket or do I need a physical holster? Oh one more thing when carrying my 9mm in a holster are there any certain parts of the gun that the holster has to cover or does it require a strap? I like the very minimalistic xd subcompact holsters but dont want to be in the wrong.

Thanks for your patience
Erik
I know its restrictive but i cant picture myself never carrying again I thought of one more question as well I know you can open carry with a belt holster but what about a shoulder holster? An uncovered shoulder holster is considered open carry in Idaho but then again its the wild west up here

I currently have a Walther P22. I love the gun's comfort and very small size which makes it very easy to conceal and very comfortable to shoot. This gun fits without a holster comfortably in my waste line on my side. I read several reviews and found that most people either love it or hate it. I'm kind of in between. It does like to jam if you do not keep the gun oiled frequently. I'm looking for something with a higher caliber with good reliability and around the same size as the P22. I do not particularly like Glock because I hate not having a hammer. So if anyone has any suggestions on a similar higher caliber but yet very small pistol with a hammer please let me know. I just need the same or similar dimensions and also light weight. Thanks.

My Criminal Justice teacher presented this question for homework:

A man and his wife were returning to their car after seeing a movie. On the way through the parking lot, they observed three males walking towards them. The three were loud, boisterous, and using profanity. As the three approached the couple at about 100 feet away, the profanity was turned towards the couple. The male in the middle was about 6 feet tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, his hands in his pockets. The male to his left, about 5'6''/5'7'', wearing a backwards cap, had his hands behind his back. The third member was average height, 5'9'' or 5'10'' and had his left hand in his pants pocket. At approximately 50 feet from the couple, the three members of the group, as they were walking towards the couple, parted. The man in the middle continued straight towards them, the man to his left veered about 15 feet to the left, the other veering fifteen feet to the right, creating an ark. The male of the couple stopped walking and told the three men to stop where they are, do not come any closer, and that he had a concealed weapon. The three men continued walking towards them. The man pulled out his handgun and aimed at the three thugs. He warned them again, in a loud, clear voice. "DO NOT COME CLOSER OR I WILL SHOOT." The three men hesitated, but then began to walk quickly towards them. The shots were loud enough for two police officers on duty on the next block to hear. As the police arrived, the man holstered his weapon and was standing where he had fired, holding his wife who was sobbing uncontrollably. The police, guns drawn, observe three people down, not moving, a weapon on the ground next to the victim on the left, and a man holding a sobbing woman. Write, in order, the steps you would take concerning the scene.

Any help is appreciated. I don't have enough of an idea about police protocol to be able to answer this question confidently.

Can i use a standard hip holster and cover it with my shirt?

I have a Glock 23, .40. I have been in law enforcement for about 9 months. I waited so long to get it now that i have it i'm wondering what, if any, holster is ok.

I just recently got my concealed carry weapon permit. I am considering different handguns for carry on me in a side holster. I am looking for a semi auto handgun..as I am open as to caliber. I have been looking at a Glock 23 but I would like an external safety. So what should I get?
The reason for the safety is just that I have talked to some people including a Sheriffs Officer I know and they are big into having an extra safety that just the trigger safety. On my research it is hard to find anything that has the reliability and cost effectiveness of the Glock 23.

i recently purchased springfield xdm as my first handgun. i love it. only have a couple hundred rounds in it. this weekend i am purchasing a beretta 92fs.
in a couple weeks i am taking my conceal and carry course and then i will be able to carry in minnesota. i was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on a good gun for carrying? im kinda looking at the springfield sub-compact or maybe the walther pps. also, anyone have a crossbreed iwb holster? ive heard good things about them and will probably be purchasing one unless i hear otherwise.

i know that you cannot carry a concealed weapon in WI, but i've heard that it is ok to carry a handgun as long as it is in open view, like being visible on a holster. is this true? and if it is, what re some of the rules that go along with it?

I've often wondered exactly what a peron who is carrying a concealed handgun is required to do to keep his weapon 'concealed'. For example, which of the following situations could get a person in trouble with the law if someone noticed and complained:

1. Wearing a weapon in a belt holster concealed by a sports coat; person leans forward giving someone a view of the weapon.
2. A person noticing, say, the bottom of a holster, or the outline of a grip under a shirt.
3. A person trips, falling into another person carrying concealed and brushes or falls into or accidentally grabs at the weapon.

Basically, at what point are you no longer meeting your obligation to keep your concealed weapon concealed?

Basically its the gun, case, two magazines,40 rounds of hollow points,a conceal carry holster for 300 bucks. he said i can pay half now and half in two weeks when i get paid again. i dont really need the gun and its a nice gun but i just wanted to know if it was a good deal that i should jump on. its in very good condition. anyone have any experience with this handgun

I want something that conceals comfortably in a iwb holster.
I'm only interested in Glocks (I have experience shooting my neighbors' 9mm, 40 cal, and 45.) I found that Glock feels best in my hand.
Hopefully, someone can either ease, or confirm my worries about each caliber, and help me decide on what might be best.
I was trying to decide between these Glock handguns:

Glock 19: I've heard that Glock specializes in the 9mm, but I'm worried about lack of stopping power.

Glock 23: I've heard the 40 cal is an almost perfect self defense round, but I'm worried about it's ability to penetrate as good as a 9mm. (For me, I want superior penetration, along with good expansion).

Glock 30: From what I read, the 45 caliber offers excellent stopping power. However, I'm worried that the short barrel slows down the bullet, and I'm concerned about lack of penetration and lack of expansion.

Glock 32: I've heard that the 357 sig has extreme penetration, but I'm worried that it is expensive, and hard to find at local stores (especially in an emergency).

I've also held a Glock 29 at my nearest gunstore, but the grip is way to big for my hands (I have small hands).
I'm scheduled to take my CCW class in the beginning of next month.
I really want a caliber that penetrates between at least 15"-18"

I have a beretta 92 and the store has been robbed at gunpoint in the past. I have an in the pants small of back holster. I plan on getting my licence later on and the store has no firearm policy. Just wondering if I'd get in trouble for carrying already.
thanks everyone but it turns out that even if i had a licence i would still get in trouble, the business gets more than 51% of its income from alcohol sales making it a feloney for any licenced individule. getting a licence in TX means a 10 hour class, firerange test and an application fee. long wait but ill do it either way.

Can I carry a handgun while camping in Virginia without a concealed permit?

-if i holster the gun where it is visible?

i just got a 9mm and i am not 21 yet so i can not get my carry concealed in nc. but i would like to have it in my car, so i wanted to know if i need any license to carry it in my car.
and also how do i need to have it so it will not be concealed

How do armored car guards get a license to openly carry rifles or a shotgun in their truck and always have a holstered handgun on them at all times when no private citizen is allowed to get a permit? And fyi Illinois is a no-issue concealed carry firearm state.

A guy from my high school recently got arrested for a car break-in where he stole a couple rifles from some guy's truck. I guess that's all he's being charged with, but at school, it's more or less known that he has been doing this for years:

-Stealing unsecured firearms from cars

-Getting lists of hospital patients and ages from a friend at a local emergency ward, and robbing the houses of old people for guns and jewelry while they are in the ER

-Pulling armed robberies/assaults on people with holsters, and taking their concealed pistol (that's called "smash and grab" - you ambush the guy with the holster with a blow to the back of the head, then your friend hits him from the front, then you both take the poor guy's gun)

Apparently he has mostly been reselling these stolen guns to gangs in Dallas and Ft. Worth.

But why has it been so easy for him to get away with this? Why don't Americans do a better job securing their firearms? I'm 17, but I have a handgun. But when I'm at school, it's in a secret hidden compartment that a home robbery would not uncover. That's just common sense.
It's a gun responsibility rant. If you're a gun owner like me, you should be responsible with your firearms! A lot of the illegal firearms with gangs or on the street could be prevented from getting there if people took simple steps to secure their firearms.

...to help conceal the weapon? Have you found one that is comfortable, and easily concealable? What about ankle holsters, are any of them very comfortable?

i'm looking into buying a gun for the glove compartment of my car for security. the #1 on my list is a Taurus .38 special but i'm open to suggestions. also considering a baby Glock.

also, is it true that Georgia recently changed the laws to where, without a concealed weapons permit, you can carry (almost) any loaded handgun (almost) anywhere in your car so long as it's in the holster?

thanks

What's the process? Age limit? Where can I carry the handgun (i.e. any place I want (i.e. public/private/government properties, etc.) as long as its concealed/in holster)?

I know you need a separate license to have a handgun in NYC, and that license can ONLY be used in NYC and no where else; this is not the case for me (as I do not live in NYC).

P.S. How much do they normally go for? I would prefer a BERETTA 9mm since its nice and small, and look quite attractive.

i have a concealed carry license, but i assume that is irrelevant to this question.
i live in North Carolina which is an "Open Carry State".
would most cops who saw me just assume that i am legal to own/carry it and not say anything to me about it?

check my stats, i always select the best answer.

I saw a man walk into a store and he didnt have any sign that he was a police officer or sercurity guard or anything. . .he just had his gun out in his holster on his waist. . .the the concealed handgun permit allow you to do that. . .or can anyone explain to me if there are handgun permit levels or something

what is the most comfortable and practical concealed handgun holster

The gun is registered to me and perfectly legal. Its a Glock 23 .40cal
Can i buy an open carry holster and wear my glock openly in my house? A friend of mine told me i could wear it concealed on my property if i really wanted. But i prefer for it not to leave my home. Can i legally wear it not concealed in my home? With the rise in murders, home invasions, and burglary's. I would just rather be safe then dead.
I live in North America, An no i dont live in Ca.
I never said anything about threatening people with it or fireing shots I have been around guns for nearly 12 years. I know how to handle a firearm.

CONCEALED weapons question? ?
I am an ex Military Police Officer - used to carrying a colt 1911A1 .45 in a holster on my hip on my right side, up high so it was harder to snatch.

Now, I'm not a cop. I have a concealed handgun permit.

First - it is difficult to change my mentality from that of "patrol" or "infantry" or "boarding party" to "man about town with paranoia left over from the service". But at any rate...

I have a Star .45 from Spain that is smaller than a 1911 (Six rounds, vs.8 plus a shorter barrel), but I'm having a hard time concealing it. I usually wear baggy pants so I CAAAAANNNNN put it in my right pocket - but easy and quick access isn't so easy or quick (by police or military standards).

I have a reversible holster that I can wear INSIDE my belt on my right side with a baggy teeshirt hanging over it which makes access very quck - but carrying uncomfortable.

However, a great deal of the time I wear a dress shirt, tie, slacks but no suit coat, making concealment more difficult - so shoulder holster is out.

In the back of my belt is out - I'm wondering about an ankle holster? Anyone use those? Or any other suggestions? (A grenade in the crotch of my pants? jk - lol)

These are probably going to sound pretty dumb, but I don't really know the answers.

1: I have a holster that was made for a 6.5 in barreled revolver (doesn't matter what type, it will hold it), and it looks big enough to hold my L.A.R Grizzly Mark 1. It's a Bianchi X-2100 made for a .357/.38 revolver, and has the front of it open, and if I just bend the metal that keeps it shut, I could hold a rather large auto loader in it, would this be a good idea? It's not for concealed carry, it's for hunting.

2: I was thinking that my handgun might need to be refinished eventually in the near future. I don't care about collector value as I will be using the handgun pretty frequently once I have some conversion kits. Once I refinish it, should I have it refinished with the NP3 coat that I've seen, or should I go with another kind of coat?

3: If the holster mentioned in question 1 wouldn't work very well, what holster brand would you recommend for a 6.5" barreled L.A.R Grizzly Mark 1 with compensator?

4: I plan on replacing a few pieces to get the gun the way I want it. I plan on replacing the main spring housing which is flat to one that is arched (like the feel of it better), a new grip safety that has a bump on it (again, like the feel better), adding a Magazine guide with a lanyard ring (I like the lanyard ring. No use for it, but I like the look), new grips, a reproduction 1911 wide spur hammer (like the style of it), and a new trigger with holes punched in it (again, like the style of it). Would it be a waste of money to do any of this, or should I only consider it if it doesn't cost too much?

Thank you for your time, and for any information you can give me.

If I carry a handgun in open view, such as in a holster on my hip, do I still need a concealled weapon permit in California?

It may sound like a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer. I'm trying to figure out if it is at all legal to walk around with a handgun (in WV).

The reason I ask: I've been going fishing out to a few holes where bears/coyotes have been spotted. Doesn't really worry me. But lately, my wife and her sister have been wanting to come along. Which I have no problem with! My concern is that the places I go are a bit out in the boonies. Hardly anybody around, quite a mountain drive to get to civilization. If danger rears its ugly head, I want to have a means of defense other than my own two feet.

Obviously the best choice is to carry a firearm. But already having my fishing gear, I'd rather not be bogged down by the weight of a rifle or shotgun. I'd like to know there's any way a person can have a handgun on them (not concealed, perfectly visible and holstered) while walking around in the woods. (And no, this is not for hunting purposes.)

Im just wondering if its legal to carry a registered handgun in public, as long as it is visible, without a concealed weapons permit?

I'm 18, and I know I can buy privately(or be given, in this case) a handgun. I also know I have to be 21 to conceal carry. Question is, can I open carry the handgun? Also, can I keep it in my truck's glove box? If not, would carrying a shotgun in a leg holster legal (mostly when hiking)?
KRS 527.020 (8) says I can keep it in my glove box(Thanks, Wikipedia!). I think I'll just call the courthouse, instead, and ask about the open carry. I'd say a shotgun that would suit a leg holster and be legal would be pretty expensive. Not to mention the holster itself.

to avoid concealed weapon charges? Should we just bring back guns and holsters?

Can someone legally carry a handgun in a holster in plain sight in Arizona if he/she has a concealed weapons permit (CCW) or do you have to take every possible precaution to make sure that the handgun is completely concealed/hidden (not viewable) on your person when in public (obviously, except for restricted areas such as bars etc).

Or, rather, is the term "concealed weapon" supposed to be taken 100% literally?
Thanks for answering a question that I didn't ask, neonlights1971. You assume that I'm asking because I want to carry a gun in plain sight. However, you assume incorrectly. Thanks for your opinions on the subject, though. :|

The Ohio Revised Code section 2923.16 division (E)(1)(a) states:
"No person who has been issued a license or temporary emergency license to carry a concealed handgun shall knowingly transport or have a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle unless the loaded handgun is in a holster on the person’s person".

My questions are:
1) Do you really need that holster? Can't you just stick the gun under your pants (and cover with shirt)? Can you get arrested for not having a holster if you get stopped for a traffic violation?
2) Do you need a holster when you carry concealed outside a motor vehicle?

Thanks.
I don't have a problem comprehending the text of the law. What I want to know is if the holster requirement is enforced and what is the penalty for not having one. PS: I know the benefits of the holster.

I'm looking to go on an extended camping trip alone. This time I'll be going to a boy scout camp during the off season (no kids). I want to pack a handgun to protect myself against would-be tent intruders (bears/thugs), and also to give myself some peace of mind while realizing I'm in the woods all alone in the dark (also part of the fun). Any advise on how to do this without having a concealed carry license? I want to pack the gun in my huge expedition backpack and simply have access to it at night. I don't want to cause commotion by holstering it on my hip like John Wayne.

If its on your property, can you carry a registered handgun open or concealed? I'm asking this because i work on my truck alot in my yard and I am almost constantly threatened by my neighbor because he claims "im white trash" because i work on an old truck i bought to restore. Everytime he trespasses on my property, threatens me ect. I get a police report. I literitly have 8 of them within the last 2 months. But if he's just calling me "white trash" or "honkey" or something to that extent i just ignore it. But i dont want to fear walking into my own yard. It it ok to keep my handgun in my holster (open or concealed) while i work in my yard?
The handgun is in my name, and registered. An i dont say anything to this guy, the only time I have opened my mouth to his is when he walked up to me to cuss me out on my property.
I was in the Military for 6 years, I THINK i might know how to handle a firearm...

I live in california can anyone tell me if it is illegal to carry a loaded handgun in shoulder holsters even if i have a license P.
S i dont have the gun or license that is why im asking. Mature answers only please

I'm aware that you can't carry a 'concealed' handgun unless you have a CHL permit. But what about if you want to carry one in plain view ( holsler ) attached to your belt? What is the HB number associated with that if anyone knows?

If open carry of firearms is illegal as many claim then how would one hunt without a CCW permit?

have a concealed carry permit. i was walking to the mail box the other day, and my neighbor was walking with his wife and newborn in a stroller. they were also walking the dog. as they walked by, i bent down and petted the dog. having a concealed firearm permit, my handgun that was holstered showed when i bent over to pet the dog. after petting the dog, my neighbor walked off. it seemed to not have bothered him at the time, but now he walks on the other side of the street. i wave, and he doesn't wave (just nods)....what the hell is his problem? is he anti-gun?......
i don't look like a psycho. i'm clean clut and was dressed well the day he saw the gun. my neighborhood is all homes priced 400k and above, so it's not a neighborhood with lots of odd balls.....so what's his problem?
i understand it's strange to merely carry the gun to get the mail. the thing is, it was one of those times when u get home and pull into the garage...and then walk out to check the mail .......

Right now I have a 1911 45 and a HK USP 40. I would like a holster that works best in the small of my back or even on my side in the waistband. Also one that has the extra mag pouch connected.

what are the rules and regulations for carrying a handgun in a holster...but not concealed

What is the best type of holster for carrying a concealed handgun.

I have to wear a tucked in shirt and a belt because of work.

Half the time it is casual and half the time it is a shirt and tie.

I have heard conflicting reports about the pager pal, and the Smart carry.

Some people like them some dont.

I want something that is comftorble, easy to get to in a hurry, and safe.

The type of gun is not too important as I own several now that my father left me several in his will.

What are your recomendations.
I have a few extra pounds.

I am 5'10 and weigh about 230.

Male, right hander.

I have a new Springfield XD9 Sub-Compact. Awesome little gun. I am 5'7", and have a slim athletic build. I tend to dress on the tomboyish side, and never carry a purse. I'm working on getting my CCW permit, and I'm wondering what my options are for holsters.

I am 27 and just moved to Florida from the crazy gun-controlling state of NJ. Since FL is a shall-issue state, I plan on getting a CWP. I have some shooting experience from the military but I prefer to carry an handgun style air pistol.

This is my preference, please do not question me on that.

Anyway, I purchased one recently down here in FL easy as cake. I know back in NJ, they are illegal.

I know that FL has a law that does not allow open-carry. I want to know if an air pistol that looks like a handgun requires a CWP to carry concealed and or am I allowed to carry it open carry either way? Not sure what the law in FL is defining the use of these guns. I will be using a regular handgun style holster.

If I wanted to carry a handgun in West Virginia UNconcealed how old would I have to be? Is it 18 or 21? I know that you have to be 21 to a concealed carry permit, but how old do I have to be to carry a hand gun that is visible such as in a holster an my belt or hip?
I want to know how old you have to be to caarry the handgun unconcealed, I know you you have to be 21 to get the concealed carry permit. I also know that you do not need a permit in West Virginia to carry a handgun that is NOT concealed.

I have heard that you can CARRY a handgun at the age of 18 but you cannot purchase one. so what is the legal age to just carry a holstered, non-concealed handgun??? and how much of the gun has to be showing for it to be not concealed??? can you have it in your pocket with half of it in view or does the whole gun have to be shown??

when someone goes into places like bars, clubs, strip clubs, pool halls, movie theaters where handguns are not permitted. is it ok to have your handgun holster tucked in your pants and showing? can you show people your concealed handgun license when they check for ID? can you make the holster visible, so that people know that you ussually carry a handgun with you everywhere but not here because it is not permitted in this certain area but you may have it close by outside?

I saw a guy coming out of the store with a pistol in a holster but he was in street clothes and he didnt have a badge or anything like that but my friend said it was legal because its not concealed.
