buying first handgun

Hi, I'm looking into getting my first handgun. I already decided on the specific gun (Sig P250 .45 ACP). Looking online, I've found better prices than.According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, about 48 percent of people taking their first handgun seminars this year happen to be women. CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports on the growing trend. “It's very dangerous out there. ...6 Responses to “NJ Court: No Right to Buy Handguns”. on 29 Oct 2009 at 10:59 am # Ian Argent. There was a question about how to prepare for recession and the answers were overwhelmingly "Stockpile Ammo"! Not "Invest in gold or foreign currency" etc... The answer in the US for everything seems to be get a gun! It's not even a financially rational investment if you buy when it's high and when the economy stabilizes to sell it off.

"I also hear things like, without guns, there's no freedom" - I've lived in many countries that ban guns and they're all quite free.

"If everyone had guns, you could stop a mall shooter before he kills too many people" - I find this statement jaw dropping.

"I need guns to feed myself" - No, no you don't.

"Police response time is too slow" - So pull out a gun and confront the criminal right away and amp up the situation? Go all John Wayne? Come on cowboy, you know you likely don't have the balls / the criminal takes and uses it on you / you can't get to it / you shoot somebody's kid dared into stealing some CD's etc... Cops are trained.

"We won't be able to fight the government" - If the government turns on you, and your sons, fathers, brothers in the US armed forces turn their guns on you, you clearly have bigger issues to worry about than having a handgun.

I mean, I find these pro-gun arguments hysterical. 30,000+ people in the US die every year from guns. Aside from the approx 28,000 suicides, over 11,000 die by gun assisted homicide and out of those less than 200 have any relation to self-defense.

There is overwhelming evidence that more guns = more murders. The US has more murders per capita than any other western country and 2,000,000 prisoners. They also have more handguns (more than one per person in circulation) than anyone. It doesn't cause crime? They'd do it with a knife then? How many people would try to pull off a bank heist with a bowie knife? Some maybe, but how many would be successful? How many spree killing would there be with hammers?

Is it just that guns are so f-ing cool? How cares what the realities are, I gotta have one?
"The 2nd Amendment says I can have one" - First off, so what? If the 2nd amendment said go jump off a cliff would you do that too? Second, no it doesn't, it says "...a well armed militia..." are any of you in a Militia?
The "Wise" Cat: "
Youve never been confronted with someone with a gun and dint have your own did you.." - Actually I have, it was a .22. I'd prefer it never happens again. I'd prefer the a-hole that pointed at me was not granted access to guns so he couldn't bring them to house parties and scare the sh!t out of people. Try telling the cops and see if they care to take his gun away when you complain about that situation until he finally blows some kids head off.

"You also ignore that More Guns - Less Crime." - That's just completely wrong if you care to know: www.nationmaster.com
I would also tell you that my cousin blew his best friends head off playing Russian Roulette drunk in the woods with 6 other guys when he was a teenager. He spent 2 years in prison for that. He will never be the same. He got the gun from his dad as a present. What a gift! You see, when the blowhards try to convince you only criminals kill, it's always after the fact, they weren't criminals before hand duh!

IN Florida is it illegal for someone under 21 to own a pistol as long as they don?t buy it from an FFL?

I live and have an ID from Massachusetts. I want to buy a handgun. Which is the best and easy way?

I found out recently that my bf bought a gun. I asked him when did you get the license? And he said he didn't. Then I asked him how did he manage to get a gun but he just ignores it.

im wondering if you guys can help me. its my first gun so it doesn't need to cost too much. but something that will last me awhile and i'll have fun shooting. i was thinking of a glock 17

i just want a gun thats fun to shoot not too expensive to shoot or buy im thinking about a .44 magnum, or a 1911 .45, or a remington 700 30-06 or any other suggestions u may have? and they have to be california legal under $900

What is needed to buy handguns in Arizona at a gun store? Will background check be done for shotguns?

if I can get him to buy one.. which one should we get?

I like shooting and I also would like to teach my children. I know hunting rifles are allowed and can be bought. But what about AIRSOFT (i.e. BB and Pellets) guns? I heard they just passed a law that would allow handguns to be sold. So I'm thinking---of course Airsoft would be legal.

Anyhoot, can any shed some light on this? Can I bring them in and/or have them shipped from America?

I'm an E-4 in the USAF and my home of record is Southern California and would like to buy a handgun before i get out in the next 18 months. I have fired 6 different weapons to include a handgun since i have been in. The handgun safety certificate guide places 'active military members' in the 'excluded' portion. How do i provide proof of this? Just active duty ID card? Also being in the military make it any easier for applying for a CCW in California?

I'm currently In Army ROTC and have the opportunity to attend basic training. I'm pretty set in most aspects of everything but I'm really not that good a shooting guns. So I was just wondering if anyone has any pointers on if I should buy like a .22 rifle and just go to the shooting range or if there is something else? Should I also buy some type of handgun? Will I only be using a M16 in basic?

Thanks,
-Mark

I am 18 years old and would like to buy a handgun, from what i know right now is, i need to be 21.
But 18 to buy from a private seller.. what is a private seller??
does is it mean craigslist? or other classifieds? including gun shows?
``academy will not let me purchase one and neither pawn shops.
so can yall explain what a private seller is
2nd part of question...Can i legally buy a handgun at a gun show if im 18 years with valid license and no criminal records and clean background
IM IN TEXAS
...no illegal buying
and no straw purchases.
come on now...

im talking about legally purchasing a gun at 18 in texas at a gun show

I have always been active with handguns, but am just recently getting into long rifles and hunting. I don't want to go way over the top with my first purchase, which I have a tendancy to do...

I have found a few combo rifles that come with scopes and one even comes with a case. I know as a general rule to stay away from combos. However, all of the rifles have received really good reviews from what I have found online. I figure if the optics aren't the greatest, then I can always replace them down the road when I become better educated on scopes and such.

I am going with something in 270, but am curious to see which of these would you recommend?

Weatherby Vanguard Package
Mossberg 4X4 package (with or without the skeleton stock)
Savage Arms package in stainless

I also like the Tikka, but would have to buy optics seperately.

Im 20, active military, born and raised and still a texan residence. Can I buy a handgun before the age of 21? i keep hearing different things from different ppl. I just want someone that knows what there talking about to get me some answers plz. thanks

In my opinion, one of the best parts of being American is the ability to utterly despise something that is done by another person, yet respect their right to legally do that thing. However, it seems that many people now are forgetting that feeling, and expecting the law to completely follow their own personal moral code
(Like people who hate guns and want them to be illegal, or people who hate homosexuality and want homosexual marriage to be illegal)

So, in response to these people, can everyone tell me at least one thing that you believe is terrible, but you respect the rights of others to do it anyway?

Mine is owning handguns. As many know, I am a STRONG supporter of gun owner's rights, and have a shotgun to protect my wife and myself. However, I refuse to buy a handgun, because I fell they are much easier to abuse than a rifle or shotgun. However, I respect the rights of those that disagree, and am proud of that fact.

What about you?

i just bought a handgun for home defense and i keep it in a safe with the magazine loaded with all 10 rounds my friend told me i shldnt do that because the magazine spring will stop working???

I found a place local that has boxes of 50rd Remington UMC 9mm Luger 115gr JHP L9MM1 for $16.95 a box with no tax. I have bought lots of 9mm FMJ for target practice cheap online but even adding in the shipping its still cheaper than the local price. I dont know how plentifull handgun ammo is where you live but here most all shelfs are empty on all caliber & if not for the internet I would not be doing much shooting!
I have not fired much of the Remington UMC 9mm Luger 115gr JHP L9MM1 but from what I have it seem to be good quality & would use it day in & day out for self/home protection. So is $16.95 a good price & is the ammo good quality that I can trust my life with?
I know there is better & more expensive ammo out there, I have around 200rd of 9mm +P Remington 124 Grains JHP Golden Saber but I like to use the same ammo I practice with to be the same ammo I carry day in & day out & at $1 per round the Golden Saber is a bit to spendy!
MR S I have for the last couple years I have been shooting Federal Premium HYDRA-SHOK 147gr JHP that worked very well but my source has dried up & no longer available. I was paying much less than the $1 per round you quoted. I was paying $24.99 per box of 50 & I still have around 500 rounds of it. When I go out & target practice I will go through 200 rounds easy. The Remington I picked up shot just as well as the Federal at $200 less per case of 20 boxes.

was wondering if any one has ever heard of this place and is it a good place to buy handguns from

im new to the connecticut, hartford county area, but willing to travel.... i love guns and have started a collection, i try to buy a new gun every 2 months or so... trouble wit my hobby is, i cant find anywhere to shoot my guns in ct.. ive tried indoor ranges but alot of them dont allow long arms, outside of handgun caliber... lookin for friends with same intrest with knowledge of outdoor ranges or just plain old personall property... any info would be appreciated

Here's my situation. I'm getting ready to start my job as a Bail Enforcement Agent (Bounty Hunter) and i need to know how old you have to be to open carry a handgun in kansas cause im having trouble finding it all it mentions is conceal and carry not open and how old you have to be to buy one. im 18 by the way. oh and is it legal to buy a handgun from a friend or relative or is it legal to receive one from them as a gift?

i am interested in buying a handgun,Im aware i need an fid card to do so and am aware that it costs me 100 dollars for the card, the question is is that card good for only one gun or is it good for as many as i can get?i would also like a shotgun for skeet shooting. i have already obtained nh hunter safety card so that should clear e for the requirements. any info would be great thanks
mack_9 you are a moron!

i live in north Carolina and me and my friend wanted to go up to Virgina to some property that his family owns to shoot a lot of guns and go hunting for a couple of days while camping on the property but we just turned 17 last month. i know you cant buy a rifle and shotgun until your 18 but i dont know the rules for driving with guns. i want to bring about 13 guns with me including handguns so his family who lives up there can shoot with us. is it against the law to bring guns with us while we're only 17 driving down there?

I'm not talking about someone with a felony background. I know what happens in that case.

I'm talking about an average joe with nothing in their background but a speeding ticket or two and that's. What happens if he buys a gun and innocently (or on purpose-insert reason here) never gets around to getting a permit to carry it and is pulled over for say, speeding or what not and the cop finds the gun on his person or in his car?

I know state law varies greatly. I also know it depends on the persons background. I'm just wanting to know if a person has a clean back ground and gets busted for carrying a handgun on his/her person and doesn't have a permit. And yes, they own the gun.

Thanks-just wondering!!

I am writing an argumentative essay for A.P. honors english, Im in the 9th grade and i have been looking for a statistic about how many 18 year olds join the army a year?
Thank you it would be lots of help:)
Here is what i have so far.

Drinking age
Being eighteen is a critical age in society at this point in time. You’re able to be trusted with voting for future presidents, to fight for our country, buy cigarettes, get a handgun permit, and even check your own self out of school. You have so many rights it seems, but one thing you can’t do is consume or purchase alcohol. You technically have three more long years to wait for that privilege. Insane right? That’s why I believe the legal drinking age should be changed from twenty-one to eighteen.
When you turn eighteen you’re expected by adults to start being fully sophisticated. You’re handed all these rights as a newly found adult to society. For example you’re able to fly a plane, serve on a jury, pay taxes, and even get married, but you wouldn’t be able to sip champagne at your own wedding. Most importantly you are reliable enough to fight, armed, for our country. If the government trusts eighteen year olds to serve, fight, and even die for our country, I find it hard to believe that they can’t trust us to drink in a mature manner. Research says that
Thank you:)

I'm 20 and want a home defense shotgun. I'm not old enough to buy a handgun and live in a town with allot of home robberies. It's 18 to buy a long gun I think so do I just walk in and ask him to show me the best gun for the purpose I need? How does it work? Thanks.

I am going to be going into the police academy hopefully in May and i turn 21 May 1st. I know i have to be 21 first but i was wondering if I will have time to purchase one when I turn 21. The academy starts around the 15th. Will i have enough time to buy one if i go to get it the day i turn 21?

Are there any special models being offered by any companies that will be worth more down the line? What companies hold the most value? I'm looking to buy a .38 revolver, but am not sure which one to buy. I obviously want something fun to throw lead down range with, but that will also hold it's value as well.

I'm looking to buy my first handgun. I had my mind set on the SR9 Rugar, although after talking to many people about this gun they all said go with Glock 17 or 19. I want a 9mm striker pistol. Not super cheap but not a $1,000 either. I am a girl so I want something on the small side. I was looking at a .45 Glock but it was WAY to big. Any suggestions? Anyone own the SR9 Rugar? I will be using it for home defense but also to take to the range alot. And something that will last awhile. PLEASE HELP!! :)

My husband just got a 12 gauge shot gun for his birthday. "for home defence". which is what started me wanting a gun. But if someone were to break in our house at night I dont think I could shoot the shotgun (way to heavy!) :)

Im 21 now but when I was 18 and 19 ( 2 different times) I was hospitalized for depression on the mental health floor of a hospital ( I was not court ordered..I was seen by doctors and I went along with them telling me to try and get help..I did not attempt suicide just strongly contimplated)...I had lost someone very important to me at the time and it was really a rough time.. I had access to guns the entire time ( I have quite a few rifles and shotguns for deer hunting and sport) but never attempted to use them on myself nor would ever use them on anyone else....It is 3 years later and I have been doing well and have not been on any medication nor seen a doctor in 3 years.... it was just a rough patch in my life.....I was wondering if this would hinder me from buying a handgun? I have not been on any meds for about 2 years nor have I ever been arrested or anything..just a ticket for following too closely..would I be able to purchase a handgun?

this will be a birthday present for my husband he does alot of target practice and deer and small game hunting

can you buy a glock and take it to range same day? or do you have to do some oils and lubricating and maintenance before you put 500 rounds through it? I am getting my FID card finally tomorrow, and will be buying a glock17 same day, but wanted to know if anything I need to do to the handgun before I take it to the range...well not as if there is anything i HAVE to do, but i mean recommendations and such.
To the users with the F.I.D. card statements. Of course the application was filled out several weeks ago, i just got fingerprinted 3 or 4 days ago, and i got a call from the sgt. that the FID card is ready and to bring 7 bucks and i'm good to go. It will also have a purchase permit because i applied for 1 also. There is no 3 day way in NJ, since you have to have a FID card and purchase permit also .

the reason i ask is because if you have a pistol license you can go in to any gun shop and buy rifes, shotguns, and handguns and leave right away with them.
you people do realize I mean Fully Automatic Firearm License not a Full Automobile License I have no idea how you could possible confuse that. Why would I be comparing automobiles and fire arms. Did you not pass the 4th grade or something

I want to buy a new 9mm handgun. I was looking at the Springfield XDM, but I am only willing to spend under $400. What is a good handgun of similar quality for under $400?

I was looking to buy a new 9mm handgun soon. What pistol would you recommend for $450 and under? I was thinking the Springfield XD, but I can only find those for $500+. Thanks for the help.

I've seen so many discussions online and it seems very confusing, so many special situations!
-I'm not a criminal or a minor, no record, no felonies, I've been a CA resident for years; I'm just a regular dude who would like to get a permit / license or whatever and a handgun for personal safety.

What's the easiest / cheapest / quickest (and legal) way to go about it?

Also, I've heard that you can get much better deals just heading over to Reno to buy. Is it true? and/or what's the deal with that?
thanks
Thanks John, and I actually live near there lol! But I'd be looking for the prudent method; i.e. if something ever did happen, I'd want to be clean.

I was thinking of purchasing a handgun sometime in the near future and I was hoping for someone to give me an idea of what I might be looking for when I go to buy one.

I have not used a gun since I was very young and it was a handgun as well...

I want something easy to use, but powerful at the same time... Maybe easy to use is not the phrase I want, but any gun buff should probably know what I mean since I am a woman lol...

Thats about all I am looking for... Also I was looking through others questions about purchasing guns and there was A LOT of people commenting on how you shouldn't use guns and blah, blah, blah...

I don't care I am a Texan and I have a right to own a gun so if you don't have any answers to my questions don't comment.

My neighbor (he literally lives right across the hall from me in an apartment building) has two felonies on his record, including one attempted rape. He is not supposed to have a gun, but we live in a state where you can buy a gun from a gun show without a background check.

I already called the police, and they basically said that unless he uses it to commit a crime there is nothing they can do.

I know I should mind my own business, but I am really uncomfortable knowing that a felon and a rapist is living across the hall from me with a handgun in his apartment. I don't even want my kids to go into the hallway alone anymore. And there is only one entrance to my apartment, so I cannot exit my place without walking directly past his door.

Im in 9th grade and I have to write ANYTHING about anything, Here it is. This is the first part.

Chapter 1: General Doctor

Today in the small clinic of Cottonwood, New York, Dr. Freemore had noticed something odd. He woke up at 5:45 AM and ate breakfast as usual. He dressed up for work as a General Doctor and drove to work in the chilly day of fall. He was 34 years old and had practiced to be an Infectious Disease Specialist (IDS). An IDS would review a patient’s medical records, including X-rays, laboratory reports, etc. He would check if his patient’s had any type of disease including bacteria, virus, fungi, and parasites. But he wanted something simpler and that would make his life less complex and became a General Doctor. He still wasn’t been married. He had no TV and a laptop, which he used for his work and nothing more. A big event could happen and he would be unaware of it. Matthew’s life was very simple and relaxing until today.
During the last 3 months, 5 of his patients had experienced similar but odd symptoms, including nausea, fatigue, and most unusual of all, weakened muscle tissue. One of them passed away, his name was Oscar. Oscar was already 57 and weak, but still in good shape. He often traveled around the world to see the most exotic places. His death had been unexpected and family members had asked why. Dr. Freemore, also known as Matthew responded by saying that it was a bacteria that he caught when he traveled to Africa that attacked his organs. He knew that it was a lie but he might have become a suspect in his unexpected death, especially if Oscar’s family had known about Freemore’s past records.
Matthew began to worry if this new disease would murder his other patients. He went home to relax and thought and even though he tried not to think about it, he did. 3 days went on and another of his 5 patients already died. This time it was a young female, about the age of 27. Her name was Jessica. She was slim and was originally from France. This time, Freemore knew that her family would get skeptical and eventually tell the cops. He found out when one his co-workers had told him. He grabbed a week’s worth of provisions; a couple of old clothes and ran away as soon as he heard sirens of the police in front of his small, isolated house.
He escaped through his rear door, in silence and disappeared into the midnight darkness. He did not know the streets well as he always drove to his job and never really went outside except to shop for food. As he walked he began to question where he could go. He didn’t really have a “real” companion in the last couple of years. Matthew just though and though as he kept walking to the middle of nowhere until he was… nowhere. He turned around and maybe he could he could retrace his steps. No luck. He was in the middle of a parking lot, the size for a shopping center. The only thing making him see was a dim light near him from a lamppost that kept blinking. Matthew began to get anxious and took a pill from his briefcase. His black suit made him somewhat concealed with the darkness, except for his white shirt and his skin that was beginning to get pale.
“Hello? Is anybody out there?” he loudly stammered. Hoping to get a response, he became even more nervous and checked his cell phone. No signal. He moved on and maybe, just maybe somebody would be waiting for him. He wanted somebody to be close to him and regretted running away from the cops. And that’s when he first heard the footsteps. It was a few feet in front of him. Possibly someone or something heard him when he yelled for help. No, it couldn’t have been something. Matthew was smart enough not to believe in any of this stuff.
Of course, he had prepared when he left the house, so he bought a handgun. It was a Browning Hi-Power, (which looked like an average handgun) but he did not exactly how to shoot it. He unlocked the safety and tried pointing forward as professional as possible.
“Who is that?” he said is a smooth loud calm voice. As the footsteps got closer, the dim light showed the footsteps was a human figure. He wanted to yell but what if it was someone who wanted to hurt him? His sweat began to touch his shaved beard and his hands began to sway.
“Ahhhhhh!!!”
He ran as fast as possible and shot his gun backward toward the “human” as he was yelling in fear. He couldn’t possibly shoot a human but he didn’t want to get hurt. His veins were pumping with adrenaline and he did not bother to think for one second. He was panting and was running really fast. He ended up in a glass door....

i bought a handgun a ruger security six its a 357 magnum with a 6 inch barrel. brand new, chrome with a black rubber grip. i paid 300 dollars. did i over pay? whats it worth?

I'm interested in buying a lightweight 20 ga. synthetic Remington express 870 or a 11-87 tactical for home defense. I see them on line and in stock. I live in NH and understand handgun FFL rules etc. Have had my firearms permit for nealy 35 years and renew it whenever it's due, but don't know the rules about shipping the shotgun to me at home or is it necessary to ship toa dealer.
